Tutors

We are in constant need of tutors for our students (Tuesday and Friday nights), for their parents’ ESL classes in Arabic and in English, for our ACT Class.

We interview all tutors to ensure that they are not only academically capable, but also emotionally ready for such a position, as well as knowledgable about local resources to advice community members. It’s important to us that all volunteers support community members holistically.

Community Distribution (Saturdays)

Every Saturday, we distribute food, furniture, clothing, kitchen appliances, etc. to newcomers and families in South Nashville. We need volunteers to sort and organize donations at our distribution centers in South Nashville.

We’re also often in need of someone with accessibility to a truck to pick up donations throughout Nashville, typically furniture that is heavy, and deliver it to families in need.

Community Liaisons

An Elmahaba liaison is a volunteer who, on Saturdays, is responsible for 3-5 Arabic-speaking families at one site (like Dover Glen, Rice Road, Millwood). First and foremost, they’re responsible to communicate with family members to assess their material needs, like furniture, kitchen appliances, or food. Liaisons can also assess if there are other needs, like youth services or translation, and navigate those needs with other organizations in Nashville. Liaisons are merely the mediator between families and their needs, communicating with Elmahaba staff what to buy/get every week for families. Liaisons are NOT responsible for purchasing any needed items, just distributing them and assessing needs for the coming weeks and communicating those needs.

Translators

We are looking for translators who are available on Thursday nights from 5-6 pm to translate during our livestream. Currently, our board members translate, but we’d like to bring in a volunteer with a stipend to translate 3 times a month during our livestreams. We prefer a translator with certification, especially since many of our livestreams contain medical or legal jargon.

We are also looking for someone to fully translate our website into Egyptian Arabic.

ESL Teacher for Adults

Elmahaba is organizing its own ESL class for Arabic-speaking adults. Although we’ve designed a curriculum that is based on practical language skills needed for South Nashville residents, we are looking for a BILINGUAL instructor who can instruct in both Arabic and English, and can teach two nights a week to a group of 10 students. We are looking for multiple instructors.

We require the instructor to be bilingual. We prefer if the instructor has previous experience in teaching, especially ESL. We may be able to offer a stipend to instructors.
